If You Lose Your Motivation at Work
We can all lose motivation at work at times, it can be due to pressures outside work, changes at work or other reasons. It can also happen when you have been doing your job for a short time or a long time. When this happens, it’s important not to ignore the feeling but to try to work out why it’s come about and what’s the best thing you can do about it.
It may be that you are tired and are due a holiday, in that case, get something booked quickly and arrange to take time off, breaks are so important to rest and recharge your batteries. Or it might be something more than this, such as changes at work that you are still getting used to, and maybe not sure about. In this case get support, talk to your boss if you feel that you can, if not talk to peers and colleagues in a positive constructive way, not just having a moan. Consider what needs to change to help your motivation return.
If there is no specific reason why your motivation has gone then it might be you that has changed. So this is the time to sit down and have a good think about why you took the job in the first place, what motivated you then, remind yourself and see if this motivates you again. Perhaps you have drifted and become out of touch with your original motivations, yet there was something that attracted you to the job at one time. Or perhaps you have really ‘moved on’ and are ready for a new challenge.
If it’s the former then write down your reasons for why you wanted the job in the first place, and put them on your desk somewhere that you can see them every day to remind yourself of these.
If you feel you have outgrown this job then perhaps its time to move on, if so see this as positive, seek new options, consider what your next move is, seek the services of a careers coach if this will help. Perhaps there is exploration and training you can do to take you forward to your new career whilst staying in your present role. Maybe you like the work you are doing but are tired of working for someone else and want to work for yourself.
Sometimes you can take your time with leaving, it’s a process and it might be a year or so in the planning. In other circumstances it may be a question of just walking away, for example if you are very stressed and unhappy and simply need a total change. Everyone’s circumstances are different. The main thing is not to ignore the feeling but to do something about it. Things change all the time, and we change as well, so it’s important to be aware of this and act appropriately rather than drifting.
It’s nearly always better to do something rather than nothing, so take some kind of action, either to re-motivate yourself for your current job or seek out something new. Life is too short to live it half heartedly.
